“When microwaves were first invented, manufacturers stressed that, among other things, you could make cakes. I don’t think that particularly took off at the time, although in the last 15 years there has been a little vogue of making mug cakes in the microwave, probably because it’s weird and amazing.”
I was recently interviewed by Serina Sandhu, senior reporter at The i, for a piece about cooking with microwaves. We spoke about how microwaves were initially marketed as versatile cooking devices; their role in the rise of ready meals; and the recent trend of using microwaves to make cakes. The article was published today, ahead of a Parliamentary Reception organised by AMDEA (the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliance) aiming to persuade the Government to promote “energy efficient home appliances” as a way to net zero homes and ease the cost of living crisis.
